AI Agent Stores and Repositories

Software distribution has evolved through different computing paradigms, moving from client/server models to web-based platforms, mobile applications, and now conversational and agent-driven systems.

The emergence of the web in the 1990s enabled users to access functionality directly in the cloud without the need to install programs locally. The browser became the gateway to software and digital commerce. Later, the rise of mobile platforms provided even greater accessibility, as users could install applications from app stores. App marketplaces created a simplified abstraction layer, making software distribution faster and more seamless.

AI agents represent the next stage. They enable interaction with software in natural ways, through text, voice, or ambient channels, thereby broadening access to users who may have previously faced technical barriers. This shift introduces new distribution challenges and opportunities.

Several platforms are starting to create discovery initiatives that allow human users (and soon other AI agents) access to these agentic features:

The distribution model for AI agents remains in its early stages and is likely to undergo significant changes in the near term as adoption and integration accelerate.
