Innovator's Dilemma in Software Engineering

Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, has forecasted that AI could generate 90% of code within the next 3 to 6 months. If this prediction proves accurate, the role and responsibilities of software engineers will undergo rapid and substantial changes.

By the second quarter of 2025, Anthropic’s AI models are expected to be at the forefront of code generation, showing remarkable performance. These models are already integrated into popular tools like Replit. While it's impossible to make precise predictions about the exact percentage of code that AI will write in the future, the trend is clear: the proportion of code generated by AI is steadily increasing as more businesses embrace AI technology.

This scenario introduces a classic innovator's dilemma, as described by Clayton Christensen, that could profoundly impact the software product and services sector. For companies whose business model relies on hourly rates for software development (the "time and materials" model), an increase in productivity through AI-driven code generation may lead to fewer billable hours for the same amount of work, potentially reducing revenue (lower quantity, same price). On the other hand, firms that charge fixed fees for delivering specific features may experience the opposite effect—lower costs without affecting their revenue.

Some businesses may choose not to adopt AI-powered code generation tools due to concerns over their current quality (although these tools are improving rapidly). This reluctance could impair their performance in the next 1 to 2 years, especially as these tools become the industry standard. Other companies may hesitate to cannibalize their existing, profitable human-based services, choosing to underinvest in AI today, which could have a long-term negative impact.

Looking ahead to 2025, what was once considered "good enough" for niche applications could become the best and most cost-effective solution for a broader range of software products and projects. The key is to continue fostering innovation and rethink the role of the software architect in this rapidly evolving landscape.
