AI-Driven Coding and the Software Development Conundrum

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, projected that AI could be writing 90% of code within 3 to 6 months. If this becomes a reality, the role and structure of software engineering teams will continue evolving at a rapid pace.

Anthropic’s models are currently recognized as best-in-class for code generation. Their strong performance has led to widespread use in products like Replit, Windsurf, and other vibe-coding tools. While it is difficult to pinpoint an exact percentage of code currently being generated by AI, adoption continues to grow quarter over quarter as enterprise use expands.

This shift highlights a classic case of the innovator’s dilemma, as described by Clayton Christensen. For software development firms operating under a time-and-materials model, increased productivity through automation may result in fewer hours billed, and therefore reduced revenue (same price, lower quantity). Conversely, companies that charge fixed fees per feature or project may benefit from higher margins (same revenue, lower cost).

Some firms may choose to delay adoption of code generation tools due to perceived quality limitations, although these models are improving rapidly. This hesitation could impact these firms’ competitive position in the next 12 to 24 months, as automation becomes standard across the industry. Others may avoid adopting AI tools out of concern that these will cannibalize existing revenue streams. However, underinvesting in innovation today can lead to significant strategic disadvantages in the future.

Capabilities that were once “good enough” for niche use cases are now proving superior and more efficient across a wide range of software development needs. Continued investment in innovation - and a reevaluation of the software architect’s role - will be crucial for services firms to remain competitive.
